WaKIDS Pilot
Sumner School District is excited to be a part of a pilot project this school year that will help support families and children in the transition to kindergarten! The Washington Kindergarten Inventory of Developing Skills (WaKIDS) is being tested in two classrooms in our district and 120 classrooms around the state. Sumner volunteered to be a part of this pilot, because we want to help our state learn how best to help children succeed in kindergarten and beyond. The pilot includes families, children, teachers and early learning providers:
- Family Connection: Before school started, kindergarten teachers used a variety of transition practices to learn about student strengths and needs and making them feel welcome at school.
- Kindergarten Inventory: In the fall, kindergarten teachers will complete a more formal inventory focusing on the development of the whole child, including social and emotional, physical, cognitive and linguistic skills. Teachers have been trained on these tools, and will use the information they gain from the inventory to inform classroom instruction.
- Early Learning Collaboration: Early learning providers and kindergarten teachers will continue meeting throughout the school year to develop new ways to collaborate and share information.
Washington State Early Learning Plan
After more than a year of planning and input from hundreds of Washington residents, the Washington State Early Learning Plan has been issued. The plan is a roadmap for building a comprehensive early learning system in Washington State. It focuses on children ages birth through third grade and will help coordinate all of the great work that is happening in communities such as Sumner.
